IMPACT, Rock the Vote and Hip Hop Summit Action Network Hosts "Change
Agents: Access, Influence, Empowerment" Panel
CNN's Roland Martin Moderates Conversation
with Minority Leaders of the Civil Rights to Hip Hop Generation
WASHINGTON,
DC, August 19, 2008 - IMPACT in
partnership with Rock the Vote
and Hip Hop Summit Action Network (HSAN)
today announced it will host a panel discussion "Change Agents: Access, Influence, Empowerment" on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 8:00-10:00 AM at the Colorado Convention Center, 700
14th Street (Colfax Avenue and Speer Boulevard), during the 2008 Democratic National Convention.
"There is nothing that defines the last half-century better
than the changing dynamics of the role young minorities are making in business
and government," said Angela Rye, IMPACT's Director of Strategic
Partnerships. "We are proud to partner with such powerful organizations
within the community to bridge the gap and to embrace the study of these
differences that are so central to forces at play in our community and in
ourselves."
Moderated
by CNN political analyst and journalist, Roland Martin the discussion will
engage emerging and current political leaders, corporate executives, community
activists and entertainers to address the current state of politics and define
the roles of people of color in business and government.
Confirmed
panelists include Congresswoman Maxine Waters; Congressman Bennie G. Thompson;
CEO Sheila C. Johnson; Journalist and Activist Jeff Johnson; Commissioner
Andrew Gillum; Alderman Kacie Starr Triplett and a surprise celebrity guest who
will begin to dispel the notion of "young versus old" in politics and
determine ways that individuals can better navigate the political process and
influence public policy.
"We're
working on establishing a forum for much needed dialogue to ensure the future
progress of our community, nation and young people,” said Congressman
Bennie G. Thompson (MS). “We have one finger on the past, one on our
historic present and if we don’t engage in constructive discussion we
will miss the pulse of our future.”
"Rock the Vote everyday strives to be a change agent in our country through the power of the youth vote! We are excited about partnering with IMPACT and opening the door of discussion on how we can all work together to influence public policy," said Stephanie Young, Rock the Vote representative. According to the Democratic National Convention Committee, the 2008 convention delegation will be the most diverse in party history, the youngest being a 17 year old, one of two under the age of 18.
